Tapio Wirkkala was a graphic designer, interior designer and one of the best-known contemporary designers worldwide. He had worked for the design studio Raymond Loewy in New York and gained fame, when his works won 4 Grand Prix and 3 gold medals in the subsequent Milan Triennales of 1951 and 1954. Wirkkala had been working for Rosenthal as from 1957. His unforgettable porcelain-, glass- and cutlery designs include »Century«, »Composition«, »Kurve«,»Polygon«,»Taille«, »Variation«. The table-service »Century« had been accepted in the pemanent collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris as an example of contemporary art, »Variation« in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. For the limited art edition he created the vase object »Aphrodite« (200 pieces).
