Elvis

The new range from the Warhol Collection

16 August 2007 is the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. Thirty years ago, on the 16th of August 1977, The “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” died aged only 42 at his Graceland property in Memphis/Tennessee. With his special sound, Elvis triggered a wave of enthusiasm right round the world and became a celebrated idol. Ballads such as “Love me Tender” and “In the Ghetto” will remain unforgettable. He finally won the hearts of the German nation when he said good bye after his military service in Friedberg/Hesse  with “Muss I denn zum Städtele hinaus”

Portraits were the central theme in Andy Warhol’s art. What fascinated Warhol in stars such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor was the way they symbolised specific trends in the collective consciousness of American society. They personified visions of beauty and success. Andy Warhol used a picture of Elvis from the film “Flaming Star” as the foundation for the iconic work upon which the Rosenthal studio-line range is also based.

Many years of cooperation between Rosenthal and the Andy Warhol Foundation, as well as the “Elvis” myth, live on in this impressive collection.
