Facade Regenbogenhaus, Selb
Completion: November 1973 Otto Piene’s idea of a colorful factory façade emerged from the collaboration with Rosenthal. Rosenthal’s main administrative building became a giant picture with a width of 195m and up to 18m in height, probably the largest façade picture of its time in Germany. "Color in architecture today is a justified human concern. Why should factories be dreary? They are a part of our daily environment. I work so that dreams are festive and largely visible" says Piene about his unique work of art. The building was an essential part of the first Rosenthal factory at the beginning of the century and has grown in a way that did not blend in. The façade possesses no uniform line. The wide-spanning and colorful rainbows of Piene distract from the somewhat failed details of earlier building periods and lead to a new façade unit. Not so insignificant problems had to be overcome in the exact transmission of Piene’s design on a scale of 1:1000 on the area of 3500m2. In order to reach a special durability and non-fading consistency of the colors, extensive research was required. Special shades of reds and oranges had to be produced since they did not exist as standard colors for exterior paint. The different absorptive capacity of old and new plaster had to be balanced. In order to increase the brightness of the colors the exterior was first painted white. It took 20 painters 6 weeks to transform Piene’s ideas with mineral colors into a gigantic artistic façade picture.
