Interior Design Castle Schloss Erkersreuth, Selb
Bjørn Wiinblad Completion: Several stages until 1977 Castle Schloss Erkersreuth, located at the east end of Selb, has been built 1748 by Johann Christian baron of Lindenfeld. Privy councilor Philip Rosenthal started his porcelain painting here in 1879 and laid the foundation for today’s Rosenthal AG. The company bought the estate in 1953. The sculptor Guenter Ferdinand Ris designed the light beams greeting the visitor as well as the heavy but at the same time seemingly light stainless steel portal. This portal gave him the idea for his later on well-known porcelain relief. Ris, kinetic expert Guenter Dohr and composer Hans Werner Henze created an interesting sound, light and shape environment in the adjacent hall. Ris’ concept for this room is a three-dimensional ensemble of repeating porcelain forms and mirrored surfaces. Dohr interpreted this ensemble with 85 light sources which can be activated one-by-one or in groups. The light, rising and receding from the individual sources to Henze’s composition, changes the ensemble and seems to expand the room. Henze was imagining "porcelain" while composing and was striving for an earthy, hot and cold, tender and slightly shining sound. The group of Japanese drummer Stomo Jameshita recorded Henze’s composition and can be heard today through multiple loudspeakers. On the first floor of Schloss Erkersreuth the visitor is greeted by another hall – Copper Room, named after the copper flooring. Philip Rosenthal was able to convince HAP Grieshaber to contribute some original prints for this room. Those oversized exhibits lined up on the window side give the room a gallery-like character. A map of the world at the beginning of the room shows all the places Philip Rosenthal has visited in his life. The map is almost hiding the door to his former private chambers. If you turn around clockwise you can find the double doors designed by Bjorn Wiinblad in his typical imaginative manner, depicting pleasurable enjoyments – eating and drinking. Through those double doors the visitor enters a hall which displays porcelain pieces from all over the world throughout the history of the "white gold". Through a small hallway you enter the "picture room", exhibiting original oil paintings from various periods, saved from being destroyed only by pure luck. The castle is used privately and not open to the public.
