Günter Grass originally learnt the trade of a stonemason, then he studied graphic design and sculpturing. He was a student of Karl Hartung. He gained his worldwide fame as an author of the 20th century, however. His works include "Die Blechtrommel", "Hundejahre", "Der Butt", "Die Rättin" and "Im Krebsgang". In 1999 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his life's work.

Grass designed the artist plate No.1 "Der Fortschritt ist eine Schnecke" in 1973 for the Rosenthal limited art edition. For the series "Hommage | Philip Rosenthal" he designed the relief »Schneckenwettlauf« (49 pieces) in 2002.
